About the Project - Revolve:R edition four
The publication involves early and mid-career artists, poets, filmmakers, and musicians to collaborate and connect with a collective of artists from around the world through a year-long exchange of works and an ongoing conversation.
Revolve:R was initiated in 2011 by us – Sam Treadaway and Ricarda Vidal – as a multidisciplinary and international collaboration. The project explores a transmission of ideas through collaborative forms of communication, from the physical and tactile to the digital and intangible, and includes visual art, poetry, film, soundscapes and music. The complete works of each Revolve:R edition is published as a limited-edition bookwork, most recently Revolve:R, edition three (Arrow Bookworks & Intellect Books Bristol, UK / Chicago, USA, 2018).
Revolve:R editions now feature in public collections worldwide including:
Tate Artist Book Collection, Tate Britain, London, UK / MoMA Artist Book Collection, New York City, New York, USA /Glasgow School of Art, Scotland, UK / Goldsmiths, London, UK / The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, USA /California Institute of the Arts, San Francisco, California, USA / The British Library, London, UK / Choisi Gallery, Lugano, Switzerland, CH / and within various other collections public and private.
Revolve:R edition four
For Revolve:R, edition four we have decided to work in an entirely open-source way to optimise the nature of the collaboration and creative democracy within the group. Whereas in previous editions printed artworks have been physically sent between artists (via the mail) for edition four we are making use of a password-protected website in combination with an encrypted messaging app as the basis of our collaboration. For the first time, this will enable all members of the collective to view and listen to the works of all other artists, in real-time, throughout the project.

Revolve:R, edition four will be formed of six rounds or Revolves. Following group discussion and intention setting the project will start by Sam and Ricarda posting the first artworks and inviting all artists to create an artwork in response, to upload to the platforms utilised by a set date. The aesthetic and conceptual interconnections of the resulting set of artworks create the basis for the next Revolve and so on. Poets, filmmakers, sound artists, and musicians, are then invited to access and view the artworks from each Revolve, before creating work in response, in their chosen media and upload for all to experience. All members of edition four will have the opportunity to be in touch with one another where they can discuss their work and ideas, share resources and opportunities, creating an inclusive and supportive network. Revolve:R, edition four will be completed approximately one year from the start date and will include the work of approximately thirty artists, from a wide range of backgrounds and nationalities.
