ABSA L'Ateliers Awards

In 2013, the Absa L’Atelier Art Competition was in its 28th year, in partnership with the South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA). The Absa L’Ateliers is rated as the longest-running and most influential art contest on the continent and most certainly one of the most prestigious annual art awards. It pays homage to both established and emerging young local artists and their compelling artistic vision.

In 2013 Le Roux had her first taste of the big competitions, a daunting, intriguing curious world. Art competitions have a unique positioning in the art market. These works are not created with commercial intent at heart, but rather, to stand for issues within society and our times which need to be aired, work that moves and art that speaks. Competition artwork becomes a part of a time capsule in history in a manner. It plays a vital role in the artistic discourse. Art awards pieces are usually created as a stand-alone work with a robust conceptual drive. Artist commentary is at heart, the possibilities are endless. The rich diversity in the artists’ intention, the multitude of media utilised and the interpretations of the viewers is pure magic and a fantastic exhibition to attend.

"Our histories and herstories of imparted information formulate life as we know it. What we do with this knowledge from our foundations and sought knowledge creates life as we know it. In my view our knowledge creates our lives, and once we understand this, we better life."
